Understanding Google Searches and Traffic
I am noticing that the common theme is, I am doing everything right but I am not just getting the traffic. This is totally related to what niche you are in and what keywords you are ranking for.
Lets start with the How to Blogging niche. Now I asked this question to 5 different How To Bloggers and I was blown away by there answers. I asked how many times do you think the Keyword Blogging was searched last month in Google. I got answers from 500k to millions again the lowest being 500 thousand times.
Now let’s look at the real numbers. Let’s see how many times the keyword Blogging was searched last month in Google. Blogging was searched 34,285 last month in Google. So lets say your site is about Blogging and this is a keyword you are targeting. You divide 34,285 by 31 days. This gives you an avg of 1,106 unique hits a day. Now how many blogs are out there about Blogging looking to bring people searching for Blogging.
Lets look now at a real famous keyword string in the same niche, this is the same one that I am targeting “Make Money Online” 44,151 now again we divide this by 31 this would be 1,424 unique hits a day. Now again ask yourself how many How To Make Money Online blogs are there and we are all competing for the grand total of 1,421 searches a day.
Now lets look at niche blogging, where the real money and traffic is. Lets look at the keyword “Plumbing” 292,355 divide by 31 is 9,431 unique hits a day on a primary keyword now add all the long tails and you are looking at millions of searches a month. This is the difference folks. You could be doing everything right but at the end of the day if the niche you are writing about the masses of the world do not care guess what you will have no traffic. This is why Bait and Switch well done is so important.

All good points Vic! I struggle with that all the time, but I’m on the opposite end. My niche is too narrow, with the volume not there. I have owned my niche for 7 years, but still struggle to make good money at it.
Mike is this your only Blog?
Forgive me for not knowing, but curious where you find out what people searched for each month, etc. I tried to look on Google but damn, I can’t find it and I’m tired
Here you Go Mike goodkeywords.com
Nope. I have ventured out from my narrow niche into broader golf categories, but about the same result.
Mike I think you went with it the wrong way. I Have an idea that might work for you. But it is really a post that is how long the explanation is I will start on it right now.
Vic, I am ALL EARS to hear what you have to say kind sir!
A very good post about why you need to choose a viable niche to blog about. Don’t try and compete with the masses for a small small amount of traffic. Go where the general public is looking and make a blog to utilize this untapped market.
Great post!
I think that bloggers start blogging about a niche and then they start learning in the process. I learn about a niche first and then i decide if i start a blog about it first. Keyword research is a must.
This is right on the nail for me. No wonder I don’t seem to get any traffic no matter what keywords I use. Time to bait, I think.
Costa I will be posting tonight a few more alternatives that might be helpful.
One thing I’d like you to comment on at some point is when a niche site will see consistent search traffic where you’re not baiting and switching to pull it in.
For example, my VB.NET site had very little search traffic for July/August, maybe 10-30 hits a day if that, but suddenly shot up to 300-500 uniques a day around the beginning of September and has stayed there ever since, even without me actively posting there.
Anyone know of a good place to get a CPM ads for your sites? I’m using adbrite but everyone wants to put up CPC ads
