Make Money Blogging

by Vic on April 7, 2008

One of the most common questions of the internet today is how to make money blogging. The unfortunate thing about this phenomenon is that there is so much disinformation floating around. The fact of the matter is that most of the blogs that you read do not make very much money. Some reasons for this include the fact that many interesting topics, politics for instance, is not a very marketable niche. And while some individuals in this niche do make a significant amount of money, they are the exception and not the rule.

So you may be asking, exactly how do you make money blogging? There are two ways to do so and each requires a unique game plan and strategy in order to make it a success. Let’s take a look at these two methods.

1. Operate an Authority Blog in a Marketable Niche

Some people, develop a single (or a handful) site where they write about a monetizable subject. In the case of many bloggers, they writes about making money online. The problem is this is a horrible niche to work.

An authority blog is one that will have hundreds, maybe thousands, of original content on it. It will also have thousands, maybe millions, of incoming links from other websites on the internet. Because of these two factors a popular blog can draw thousands of visitors a day. And with that much targeted traffic, operator of the blog can make money.

The advantage of an authority blog is that it is likely to have a long life span. As you continue to add content and attract links, your online presence will grow as will your income. The disadvantage of such a blog is that it may take a very long time for you to build enough content and links to draw thousands of visitors a day. Also, many of the niches that are highly profitable already have a lot of players with mature properties that dominate that niche.

2. Operate Many Smaller Blogs in Many Niches

The other strategy is to operate many (and I mean at least one hundred) smaller blogs targeting smaller niches. Each of these blogs do not have to had hundreds of pages of content or thousands of links. Depending upon the amount of competition in a niche, it is possible to draw 10-100 visitors a day to a small blog. And, when you have many of such blogs your meager earnings will begin to add up.

The disadvantage of having many small blogs is that it can be difficult to draw a lot of traffic. You will probably be dependent on search engines for your traffic, and a change to the search formula can impact your traffic. These blogs tend to have a shorter lifespan.

But, it is entirely possible to (in a relatively short time period) build up a stable of several hundred small blogs which average $0.25 to $2.00 a day in earnings.

So, those are two strategies that people use to make money blogging and you can use them as well.

Yeah don't listen to him man, one RSS reader that you have is worth $5, if you have 10,000 that's a cool $50,000 your blog is worth!

Yippee! I was able to view this video.

Vic, I'm not sure I followed you on subject of email vs. rss feed. I subscribe to BU via RSS – was your suggestion to also subscribe to BU by email in addition to the RSS feed?

    Thanks, Patti

Patti this is indeed great news I hope you are able to see all of them and not just this one. As for the email RSS the reason I say it is because the email RSS gets sent directly to your email vs the straight feed gets pulled by the reader sometimes reader services do not pull the feed so the email is way more reliable. But in reality it is not needed ;)

If a blog doesn't offer a feedburner email subscribe option the chances I will ever make it back to that site drops to about 10%.

I rely on the feeds to keep up things. I use google alerts massively too. It is SO much easier to stay on track if emails come in daily with the exact data you find important.

If you don't have a google alert set up for your name, you really need to — especially if you are active on the net.

The other thing to do is make sure you automatically subscribe to any forum thread you make a post to and at least get daily updates of new posts in the thread. It is very easy to lose track of multiple postings and if someone follows up your post with a question and you never respond it can hurt your credibility.

Amazing we kind of work it the same way especially when it comes into forums it is crazy how many times I have subscribed to a thread where a discussion was happening on some topic that I had issues with and months later a person would actually post the fix and I get notified via email.

What video camera set up do you use to record your video blog posts?

A Mitsuba DV9002 bad bad choice as I use Adobe Visual communicator and in reality the encoding works best with firewire so currently I am still making my research to upgrade the camera this week I do not want to make the same mistake again this is why the sound and video sometimes does not sycn well.

Vic, I finally broke down an bought BANS! Man, if you say its a no brainer then it's just got to be.

I can't wait to see the keyword elite and seo elite vids. It's very instructive to watch you actually go throught the process and listen to you think out loud.

Well I guess I'm off to buy about 100 dot info domainss…hope I dont mess this one up!

I keep thinking about what you said about making a dollar a day…from 200 sites. That's got to be totally possible. Just takes time and work I guess.

Another thing about being a "power blogger" is that you get paid for promoting stuff like BlogRush and EntreCard. If you're like John Cow, you can even work it out to get paid twice.

    Hi Vic,

Hope you are feeling better, it looks like it.

A couple of questions. I have told you my money situation, so no need to go there again.

However, its my birthday on the 17th April, and the wife and kids have clubed together, I think they have got $90-$100.

My problem is what should I buy? If I buy BANS, I can't buy the domains or hosting. If I buy the domains I can't buy BANS. So on, and so on.

I'm thinking, buy BANS, then later a domain, then get the money together for the hosting. What do you think?

A couple of other things. How quickly does a new BANS site go to the box?

When you talk about keyword stuffing does it have to still be readable? If so, how many key words per 100 words?

I have been accepted as an ebay affiliate and I have seen that they have widgets for adding ebay pages to sites, is this the same as BANS?

I have asked Grizz this, and a couple of people are looking into it, do you know if you can add BANS to a blogspot blog?

Sorry for so many questions, but as I said to Grizz there are so many questions in my head. All i'm trying to do is get all my ducks in line, for when i'm ready to rock and roll.

Thanks for your help, all the best – John

Hey Vic, new reader here just stopping by to leave you a comment after watching your video. I will agree with one point you made and that is video blogging is a blast. I got into it a few weeks ago and love it too.

    Now to my disagreement.

I will side with you that company's like PPP and TLA have hurt more blogs then they have done good for but blaming them for the drop in a blogs worth or what ever you said or targeting there supporters for promoting there programs shows me who the uneducated one really is. You praise Google (or at least it seems) but they are the dumb fucks who created the market in the first place for selling links. Like really, I know they are a huge ass company but how dumb could you be by forming a method of ranking a site based on incoming links, then tell everyone the higher the rank the better the site and more traffic your going to get from our search engine and still think after you said all that, that no one will put 2 and 2 together that they just opened up a billion dollar market for some one to capitalize on.Or is that really what your getting at, the fact you didn't think of it first?

You can not blame Darren for promoting these company's and you can not blame PPP or TLA for starting a business, the only thing you can blame them for is the fact they do not disclose that using there services will hurt your rank and hurt your online income in the long run which will take you a long time to get back and that most respectable advertisers are looking for high ranked sites.

All I am trying to say Vic is you have to look at the source of the problem, and the source is Google!!

Hope you see my point dude! I make better points in videos….lol

Collin Google has the best algorithm period that is why they are number the number one this not not debatable. I will not spend time debating with some one if he is clueless to the algorithm. Show me the mathematical equation to the algorithm applied to one of your pages and then we will debate till then all you are doing is repeating shit you read some where.

Collin - Feed Flare April 14, 2008 at 2:40 am

I was not talking about there algorithm or how they built there search engine.I follow all there rules to a tee on my site as I am looking and wanting the most out of there search engine as many others do.

What I was talking about was the fact they created the market in the first place. And I never read about this somewhere else, I have first hand experience with this exact same situation off line with a very large American company where the end results was a massive spawn of more businesses due to them not seeing past the end of their noses.
