Dare To Be Different
By Vic on Mar 20, 2008 in Bloggers
The inspiration behind this vlog is Monika at The Writers Manifesto. Monika wrote an article that had me laughing my ass off and at the same time it had my wife teared up and in the process it made me think of all the shit we have to listen in life just because we dare to be different.
I hope that all of you get the same reaction both my wife and me got from such a strong article and at the same time know that you are not alone.
A Letter To My Parents
Quotes for Success
–Dale Carnegie
“Would you like me to give you a formula for success? It’s quite simple, really. Double your rate of failure. You are thinking of failure as the enemy of success. But it isn’t at all. You can be discouraged by failure or you can learn from it, So go ahead and make mistakes. Make all you can. Because remember that’s where you will find success.”

I’ve always thought Monika’s a great writer - when I read that article awhile back, I could identify with it (which is the best part of it) - I’m in the same situation she was - negative vibes all around everyday. But even though things are tougher for the moment now compared to when I was pulling a nice salary for meaningless work, I enjoy what I do and every result feels worth it, no matter how small or big.
Best line from your vid, Vic, is that if you can’t be happy by yourself, you’ll never be happy. I guess I got lucky cos I enjoy doing things myself and it’s an inner peace which has enabled me to get through tough personal times and beyond. There might be doubts here and there, but I still pull through.
Best of luck to Monika and you in the submission!!!
Btw, I agree with your wife, Vic - you really love to talk. You said you were gonna make it short, twice, in the vid and it still took you 14 minutes LMAO!
LMAO I am sorry I kind of am like an alcoholic I can not stop after a few words LOL.
@ Vic: I think the movie you were referring to with Will Smith is called “The Pursuit of HappyNess”.
I was LMAO when you mentioned the F word in regards to people telling me I was crap at writing. As a matter of fact someone did yesterday and I actually did both - tell them f off and LMAO. I got sacked from a crappy job that paid shit and it felt great! The funniest part was that never before in my life did I get sacked before and it felt great.
Listening to you was like being on one of those MLM meetings. If it is one thing I learned from MLM it is personal development.
I am totally touched by your generosity of doing a video post just for me. You know, nobody had ever done such a thing. I consider myself very fortunate on counting people like you as my friends. I’m blessed with the friendships I have made while online and many of my friends are also your readers.
As for submitting this to major media, I wouldn’t even know where to start as I have never done anything like this before. All though the idea of having my name in print does sound rather smug ;-).
I’ll be signing autographs on the next Vegas blogging show before we know it. LOL, see, I’m making jokes because I’m actually speechless from shock!
Thank you Vic, this means a lot to me!
@ YC: thank you too for your nice words. Without all of you guys it wouldn’t be half as fun.
Well I will explain on the next Vlog not just for you but for all interested the process of getting published.
Great article Monika and great video Vic.
I’ve got a low opinion of MLM because of the same person you mentioned. I saw how that scam worked in the early 1990s. I had some friends who were “true believers” in it and, sadly, although they made a little money at first by getting to the Emerald level they later lost a lot of money, their house and their marriage. Pretty sad really.
MLM has such a huge bad rap I think I will even make a Vlog about that. Way to many people got burned and way to many people still get burned.
@ Frank: thank you. I know it really sucks that MLM has gotten such a bad name. People are left out to dry and I myself lost around $50,000!
But I’ve learned more than enough for life and if it wasn’t for MLM, I simply wouldn’t be here right now.
I was fortunate enough to have taken a massive FAILURE and move toward success.
One reason MLM has such a bad name here in Oz is because of the Amway name. Even though I never heard of the guy mentioned in the video. People are simply scared.
I just made an MLM vlog and I hope it explains a bit the Amway debacle.
It is so funny to here you mention Dexter. Amway is in my backyard and yes I got suck into Quixtar. Lost thousands on that deal. I was also an Amway dist. in the early 70s. However from the experience I discovered the possibilities of making money online. It planted a seed so to speak.
I also had your wifes mother. I was never enough of a success by her standards. The only thing that kept us connected was I knew she did love me. She only wanted me to have a life that was taken from her. Her intentions could drive me nuts however. Now that she has passed I do miss her terribly even with her condescending ways. The worst part is when I find myself acting like my mother with my own daughters. I find myself apologizing a lot!
I can embrace my being different today. Trying to fit in to the so called norm drove me to the debts of insanity I would not wish on my worst enemy. But I have experiences that most people will never know. Some Great Experiences and some Horrid!
Monika, Your parents may never understand what you are doing, but they must have done something right for you to turn out as giving as you are. You cannot change them no more than they can change you. And thats OK! Hopefully the day will not come where you have to be their full time caregiver. I had to move my mother in with us until she passed. Fortunately she had her own mother-in-law apartment.
I just made vlog about Amway and mlm in general I hope you like it.
Vic, you big softy! I got a little tear in my eye listening to your vlog. That was very nice and inspirational, and yes Monika is a great writer. Thanks again for your great videos. Emma
Thank you I just wanted other to know that they are not alone.
I was right there with your wife Vic, I tracked back to this post , maybe in your Askimet, but I think Monika is on the verge of greatness
Don I did not get the ping maybe this DNS shit is still happening.
@ Emma: yes, he made me tear up too. I think somewhere we are all softies.
@ Don: Thank you, I sure hope so.
You know, I’ve read your blog for quite a while and I must say, your wife must be someone who is very important to you for you to mention her as much as you do. My husband and I are total partners in life and share everything and support each others’ dreams, so I can’t help but think it is the same with you as a couple. Must be one special lady and I am so glad to see a guy give their other half some credit when it’s deserved!
We are also a true partnership not only on business but in life and as such we act as one. I really do not know what I would do if she was not part of my life.
I actually copied the letter. I know I can send them to my parents soon enough. lol
